DeMar DeRozan is special, makes a franchise feel better about itself. Fans are happy to see him and for good reason, he is a standout scorer, the sort of guy to keep eyes upon even with the ball elsewhere.
But the same verdict still applies, the same guy cannot hit three-pointers while taking gobs of shots from a perimeter position. DeRozan slips from one well-meaning club to the next, evading double jeopardy, not to blame for Toronto falling short in its title runs or San Antonio and Chicago living in the low-40s.
It still colors the sound. DeRozan is as efficient as these performers appear, proving the limits of midrange tastes in the world of modern calorie counting. The best at these shots still isn’t enough, the one to trust the most still can’t get you there.
Get you there, yet.
