Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is alleged to be the second NBA player in the modern era to be investigated for tipping off bettors in the hours before bowing out of a game.
Aligning interests with 86’d Toronto Raptor washout Jontay Porter, Rozier (who has not been officially charged with anything) is suspected of alerting gambling outfits to his impending and otherwise unexpected removal from a contest.
Federal prosecutors followed Porter’s gambling associates toward Rozier’s non-performance in New Orleans against the Pelicans on March 23rd 2023. Rozier (then with the Charlotte Hornets) failed to accumulate his typical 21-point, four-rebound, five-assist averages in nine minutes of action, before sitting with a right foot ailment severe enough to sideline Rozier for the season’s remaining eight games.
Porter was accused of alerting wagerers of his impending inaction during his brief blips of playing time with the 2023-24 Toronto Raptors, and was banned from the NBA for life. Most damning, in the Wall St. Journal’s reporting on Rozier’s suspected indiscretions, is the acknowledgement that the NBA investigated Terry’s work in the final game of his 2022-23 season and found nothing it could term a violation of its rules.
